James Adger Smyth correspondence, 1861-1865 (bulk 1864).

Correspondence of James Adger Smyth chiefly consists of letters from Smyth at military camps and battlefields in James Island (S.C.), Virginia, and elsewhere to his wife Anne R. Smyth. The main body of the letters gives an almost day by day account from March through August 1864 of the movements of Company A of the 25th South Carolina Volunteers, General Johnson Hagood's Brigade, in which Smyth was Quartermaster-sergeant. Letters also discuss family matters, and include a letter (26 July 1861) from Smyth to his aunt Jane (Jane A. Adger), and a letter (10 July 1864) to Smyth from William Porcher Miles at Richmond (Va.) regarding Smyth's inquiry about an appointment as a quartermaster.
